Ayaan Hirsi Ali, original name Ayaan Hirsi Magan, (born November 13, 1969, Mogadishu, Somalia), Somali-born Dutch American activist, writer, and politician best known for her contention that Islam is fundamentally incompatible with Western democratic values, especially those upholding the rights of women. Ayaan Hirsi Ali was born in Mogadishu, Somalia, was raised Muslim, and spent her childhood and young adulthood in Africa and Saudi Arabia. In 1992, Hirsi Ali came to the Netherlands as a refugee. She earned her college degree in political science and worked for the Dutch Labor party. Ayaan Hirsi Ali is a research fellow at the Hoover Institution and founder of the AHA Foundation.
